One of the founding board members of the Filipino Community Centre has been recognized by the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County.
The council hosted the annual Herb Gray Harmony Awards Thursday night.
Jasmin Reyes-Tjong was the recipient of the Champion Award. Reyes-Tjong immigrated to Canada in 1976 from the Philippines and began her career at Community Living.
She also volunteered her time at the Filipino Community Centre where she was a long-time dance director and choreographer. "I'm so very honoured and humbled for receiving this Champion Award," says Reyes-Tjong. "They told me I deserve this but I said no, because I did what I did to help people because we have to do it."
Reyes-Tjong stopped volunteering in 2011 after she had a brain aneurysm and stroke. "I'm so honoured, so honoured and humbled, and I think God for all the things that he gave me to be able to help people to teach," says Reyes-Tjong.
Caesars Windsor Cares is this year's Harmony Award winner but will receive the award at a later date.
