Becoming Canadian on Canada Day might be the way to do it.
Forty men, women, and children became citizens Saturday morning.
They gathered at the Windsor International Aquatic Centre for what would be the first big event of the day.
Navneet Dewan settled in Chatham with her husband Sandeep and daughter from India five years ago. The physical therapist's second daughter was born in Canada a year later, making her a full citizen from birth.
She says the ceremony was inspiring.
"We heard some very encouraging words from the officials," says Dewan. "They gave us a nice welcome and we found that proud feeling to be Canadian and it's great."
Dewan says her family came to Canada for a better way of life.
"It was a very conscious decision to come to Canada," she says. "We had always appreciated the responsibilities and the values Canadians offer and we wanted to be apart of it."
Mayor Drew Dilkens has been on hand for citizenship ceremonies before and he says. while it's always moving to see someone become Canadian, this one was special.
"It's a special day when you're celebrating a milestone anniversary like Canada 150 and you could just see the excitement in their eyes and in their faces to become Canadian, which you see frequently when people are becoming a citizen, but this was just a little extra special," says Dilkens.
Thirteen different countries were represented at the ceremony.
