Steve Riolo has been named 2019's Italian of the Year.
The former owner of the Windsor Spitfires and founder of BMR Windsor Building Centre immigrated to Canada from Italy back in 1966.
Now 71, Riolo has a reputation for giving back to the community and the Giovanni Caboto and Italian Women's Clubs recognized his work Friday night.
Riolo says being introduced by the first Italian of the Year award recipient is the highlight of the night.
"For me to be introduced by the Honourable [Judge] Anthony Cusinato is a great honour. It's hard to describe, but it's beautiful," he says.
Riolo also give credit to his team.
"My staff makes the company and me look good. If it wouldn't be for them, I would not be Italian of the Year today, that's for sure," he says.
At the end of the day, Riolo says he's always trying to pay it forward.
"I made my fortune through the public and the community, so I feel I should give some back," he added.
Riolo says seeing hundreds come out to celebrate was a humbling experience.
Proceeds from Friday's gala at the Caboto Club will go to local charities in Windsor-Essex.
