A former Windsor city employee is going to jail for fraud.
Following a trial, Angela Berry, 49, was found guilty of fraud over $5,000 and was sentenced Tuesday to seven months in jail followed by two years probation.
Berry was a former operations asset analyst with the city when she defrauded the city of $38,647 in 2014 and 2015 through an elaborate scheme to redirect money for her benefit.
Before being sentenced, Berry made an emotional plea and told the court she was 'humiliated, embarrassed and ashamed.'
In handing down his sentence, Justice Bruce Thomas said given the detailed scheme created by Berry and its 'constructed web of lies' that he remained, at all times, 'skeptical of her sincerity.'
"I thought the sentence was somewhat harsh," said Berry's lawyer Linda McCurdy outside of Superior court. "I didn't expect him to go that long, as far as custodial sentence is concerned so I was a little bit surprised by that."
The judge also made a restitution order for Berry to pay back the funds.
McCurdy was seeking a suspended sentence with probation, meaning no jail time, pointing out Berry has a daughter with disabilities who needed her at home.
Assistant Crown Megan McCleland asked for a jail term of six to nine months in jail because 'it was a fraud against taxpayers and a breach of trust.'
