The former Catholic Central High School building will be accommodated for adult learners.
During Tuesday's Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board meeting, trustees approved a recommendation for the former CCH building on Tecumseh Road East to be a permanent home for those who attend St. Michael's Adult Catholic High School.
The WECDSB was recently granted permission from the Ontario Ministry of Education to relocate St. Michael's which is currently located on Detroit Street in a former elementary school in the west end.
St. Michael's is a school for adults who want to upgrade their skills and earn their high school diplomas, and will start in the former CCH beginning in September.
The WECDSB says that with a recent influx of newcomers to Canada, many of whom need to earn their high school diploma to find a employment, the former site at St. Michael's can't accommodate all of the adult learners, and the former CCH is much larger.
Current enrolment at St. Michael's is about 1,000 students, although not all of them are in the building at the same time, but the former CCH can accommodate approximately 850 students.
The board has budgeted $80,000 for renovations to the Tecumseh Road site. No decision has been made yet on what to do with the Detroit Street school, which was once home to St. Francis Catholic Elementary School.
