Tipping fees increased due to flood damage.

Last summer's flooding in Windsor-Essex has produced an unexpected windfall at the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority.

Ruined furniture and carpets had to be dumped at the regional landfill which resulted in a huge boost in tipping fees, more than $860,000 worth.

EWSWA board member Tom Bain says extra greenhouse waste also added to the jump in revenue.

"Probably both of these things are one-time items," says Bain. "Hopefully, we never see the flooding again and unfortunately the greenhouse waste is generally recycled, but that material for the last two months of the year had to be landfilled."

The authority hasn't decided yet what to do with the extra cash. Work is underway on finalizing a new budget.
