While Mother Nature ultimately has the final say, the Town of LaSalle is taking a number of measures to combat flooding.
According to Mayor Marc Bondy, pumps have been put in place to mitigate flooding along Front Rd. near LaSalle Marina and the town has partnered with the University of Windsor in a pilot project monitoring water levels and wave action with state-of-the-art buoys.
Bondy says the buoys can warn of future flooding.
"If it says the water level is this and we know it's rising and the wind direction is coming out of the east, we know we're going to have an issue. So we could be a little more proactive. The information they're giving us and we're going to available, it's going to be in real time. It's going to be very helpful for us."
He says, while the pumps on Front Rd. are not a permanent solution, they seem to be working for the time being.
There's a drain there working and a pump running all the time. For Front Rd. and the boat ramp, for access there, they also have a pump running to keep the cavity clear of water so that the parking areas can drain."
The situation changes on a daily basis, says Bondy. Adding, the worst might still be on the way.
We don't know what the long-term problem is going to be," he says. "We had a meeting last Thursday relating to the water levels and were told that August we're going to hit the highest water levels. If we get that and the wind direction, then we may have some more flooding. So we don't have all the answers because it's Mother Nature that's affecting us.
Front Rd. has been closed several times in the past couple of months due to water on the road.
The town has also been forced to close the boat ramp at LaSalle Marina and the outdoor pool on Front Rd. due to high water levels — both have since been reopened.
