Plans are underway to make the necessary repairs to return more than 200 people displaced after a fire at a downtown Windsor apartment building.
Tuesday morning, a car fire broke out in the underground parking garage at Westcourt Place on Goyeau Ave, damaging the electrical system leaving the building without power, heat and water so the medical officer of health evacuated the building.
Five people, including two firefighters, suffered smoke inhalation.
Windsor Fire Chief Stephen Laforet says all five people have been released from the hospital.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Chief Laforet says the priority is to fix the electrical system.
"We are preparing a plan to transition back to the building owner and the insurer and then there will be a series of steps relative to restoring power, working with all of the regulatory agencies so that would be the Electrical Safety Authority, Windsor Fire, the building department," he says.
Laforet says for now, the timelines remains the same.
"Yesterday, we said at least 72 hours, but prepare for longer," he says.
Corporate Leader for Social Development and Health Jelena Payne says the shelter at the WFCU Centre remains open and active saying the numbers are fluid as some people come and go while trying to find accommodations.
She says the owner of the building, from Montreal, is involved in the process.
"The owners of the property have sent a representative down from Toronto who was at our debrief this morning," says Payne. "We are working with them, we are working with the timeline, I mean right now it is just trying to determine how much longer this is going to take."
The Provincial Offences Court located at the Westcourt Place will remain closed for the week.
A temporary location has been opened for making payments in the lobby at 350 City Hall Square West.
Court and early resolution meetings will resume next week but a location has not been finalized.
