First responders had their work cut out for them on Lake Erie Saturday Morning.
Rescuers went to work after more than 100 ice-fishermen were separated from shore near Catawaba Island southwest of Pelee Island.
The U.S. Coast Guard was called in at around 8am and launched two 20-ft. Special Purpose Craft-Airboats, two MH-65 Dolphin helicopters from Air Station Detroit, and two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters to respond to the mass rescue.
Helicopters and air-boats scooped up 46 people from the ice floe — another 100 people either swam or walked to safety on ice bridges that were still connected to shore, according to a release.
Officials took the opportunity to remind residents to stay off the ice as temperatures begin to rise.
