Former Michigan State Representative Rashida Tlaib is making history again.
After a win in the Democratic primary to take over the 13th Congressional District, Tlaib heads to Washington in 2019 as the country's first Muslim congresswoman.
Tlaib says she can't wait to get to work.
"I'm so proud of being somebody of Muslim faith, I'm so proud of the historic campaign we ran but I'm really ready to just get to work," she says. "To prove to the families of the 13th Congressional District that somebody that has gone through similar challenges and won't back down until they can thrive just like any other American across the country."
Tlaib says she wants her actions to speak for her.
"They don't have to be billionaires and have a certain type of education to be respected and to be loved," says Tlaib. "I'm excited about being able to expose my faith in such a profound way through public service."
The congresswoman has had a longstanding dialog on environmental issues with Windsor West NDP MP Brian Masse and looks forward to continuing to work with her neighbours in Windsor-Essex.
"That is the kind of partnership I hope to continue growing and me having that strong support from Brian Masse, that's the kind of relationship we need to really build," she added.
The daughter of Palestinian immigrants became the first Muslim woman to serve in Michigan's legislature back in 2010.
She's taking over the district that was served by long-time Democratic Congressman John Conyers.
