The fire on Fighting Island has officially been ruled accidental.
LaSalle Fire and Rescue Chief Dave Sutton says it's still unknown what triggered the incident, but investigators have concluded it wasn't intentionally set.
"I don't know that there was ever a point that we considered it suspicious, but we evaluated everything, as we do in any investigation, and came to the conclusion that it was an accidental cause," he says.
Hundreds of people had eyes on the fire across from LaSalle Marina that could be seen as far away as Amherstburg.
Sutton tells AM800 News lot of tips came in, but nothing pointed to arson or negligence on the island.
"Something very, very, visible and prominent like that, we had a number of pieces of information come forward from the public and we looked into all of those things," he added.
He says he's been in contact with BASF — which owns the island — and the attention has now turned to restoring the marsh.
"Obviously it's been a very good season for growing. In terms of the structures on the island that were affected, I'm not exactly sure on the status," says Sutton, who added buildings on the island were saved "There was an intention to restore things to the way they were previously. I assume that's ongoing."
No one was injured and Sutton says the damage was relegated to the marsh and board walk.
The island hosted educational programming for school boards in Windsor-Essex, no word on when that will resume.
