The Brain Injury Association of Windsor and Essex County has received a funding boost from the federal government.
A recent grant from the Emergency Community Support Fund for $38,500 will allow the association to hire a virtual support coordinator.
Executive Director Anna Jurak, says the coordinator will help patients get help remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Work with people with a brain injury in finding out the best way technology that they need so that they can access services because we're not doing one on one or in person services right now," she says. "Everything is being done through Zoom."
She says many of the people served by the association either don't have access to technology or don't know how to use it.
"This virtual support coordinator will make the purchases for the technology that they need, set up the apps and the programs that they need and will teach them how to use it so they can access or programs and services," added Jurak.
Federal and provincial funding is critical right now, according to Jurak.
"Obviously we can't do any fundraisers right now and we still need to operate. This is helping us get through this period," she says.
There are currently half a million Ontarians living with a brain injury, according to the association's website.
Jurak hopes to have the new coordinator position filled in two weeks.
