Essex-Windsor EMS is taking part in a unique program.
The service has been hosting Dr. Erika Jamrichova from Slovakia as part of an international exchange.
Local paramedic Mike Filiault is also a member of EMS Team Ontario.
He says the idea for the exchange came about when the team was in Europe taking part in the international 'Rallye Rejviz' paramedic competition where they won gold in 2016 and 2017.
Filiault says being exposed to new methods can be very beneficial.
"There's more than one way to treat a patient," says Filiault. "The more you see, the more you learn. We think that there's medical expertise all over the world and they attack these patients in different ways. The treatment is incredible. So, we should be continuously learning and from that, I think, our patients get better care."
Jamrichova says she's been impressed by her Windsor counterparts.
"I love the attitude of your paramedics," says Jamrichova. "I think, for the patient, it's amazing that he or she has someone next to him or her who has their back which is amazing. So, that's what I definitely want to take home."
Members of EMS Team Ontario will be heading to Slovakia sometime in the new year.
