Essex Powerlines is encouraging its customers to go green.
It has launched a paperless billing campaign, but with an added incentive.
General Manager Joe Barile says for every customer who switches to paperless billing, Essex Powerlines will plant a tree.
Barile says this is about being environmentally responsible.
"Realistically, we just hope that there is an uptake in terms of awareness and going paperless and the benefits of going paperless. The added benefit of having that tree planted in the shareholder's community is another plus."
He says this is where billing is going.
"There will always be individuals who want to see it live on paper, but in the world we live today, everything is going digital."
Barile says if 25% of its customers make the switch, it could save 1,400 trees.
"We currently have roughly between 15% and 20% of our customer's on paperless billing, if we double that, it will be a very successful campaign."
Essex Powerlines services 30,000 customers in Tecumseh, Leamington, Amherstburg and LaSalle.
The initiative will continue until March 31, 2018.
