Essex MPP Taras Natyshak is calling on incoming Ontario Premier Doug Ford to follow through with an election promise.
Natyshak wants to Ford to direct the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Ontario to begin the widening of Highway 3 from Essex to Leamington.
"The accidents aren't going to wait for the Conservative party to balance their budget," says Natyshak.
The renewed call comes after a four-vehicle crash on the roadway in Kingsville on Wednesday.
Natyshak tells CTV Windsor Highway 3 is the most "shovel-ready" project in the province.
"This can be just a measure of priority through the new Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure," says Natyshak. "We don't need a stand alone bill to make Highway 3 go-ahead, to initiate the third phase, they could do it today."
While Natyshak wants to pressure the new government into action, OPP Constable Jim Root is hesitant. He tells CTV Windsor motorists have to take responsibility for their actions.
"Highways don't cause collisions, people cause collisions," says Root. "Whether it be a two lane or four lane or what not, we always have to cautious of the vehicles around us."
Police say they are still investigating the chain-reaction crash that involved five people, two of which were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Kingsville Fire Chief Chuck Parsons tells CTV Windsor they have already responded to six collisions on Highway 3 this year. There were 12 in 2017. "It definitely will reduce our call volume if we get a much safer highway in that area" says Parsons.
While campaign in Essex County on May 24th, Ford promised to expand the highway immediately.
The NDP estimates it would cost $50-million to finish widening Highway 3 from two lanes to four lanes.
