A councillor in the Town of Essex is pushing for an idling by-law.
Sherry Bondy wants the town to crack down on excessive idling of vehicles.
She's bringing forward a notice of motion at tonight's meeting and hopes to get council's support.
Bondy says the issue was originally discussed a couple years back and the town decided to do an educational campaign but she calls the campaign a flop.
"In this day in age with everything we have going on with the planet, there's cars that will just idle for 15 or 20 minutes for really no reason," says Bondy. "It's like why are people doing that so what can Essex council do to lead the way with environmental initiatives which is something I want to push."
She says Essex need to look at other municipalities.
"I know that the city of Windsor has an idling bylaw so can we look at their idling bylaw, see why there's is working or we they can even have one and pick and choose," says Bondy. "The health unit is also willing to work with us. I've been in contact with us, they've provided us some information and I just generally think it's a healthy conversation to have."
Bondy says the local health unit is willing to work with the town on an idling bylaw and she ultimately believes it will come down to enforcement, which she acknowledges, will be hard to do.
