Ward 3 Councillor Ron Rogers wanted to know what steps needed to be taken to get a non-medical marijuana facility in Harrow — he got his answer at Monday night's council meeting.
Town of Essex CAO Donna Hunter did a little leg work — Rogers says she was told it can't happen, at least not yet.
"The province doesn't really have a vehicle for getting towns names in there and upfront," he says.
Hunter told council the province isn't accepting applications, only designating locations. Rogers says council will still express interest to the province rather than do nothing.
"What we're going to do is send a letter to departments in the province that would be responsible, and make sure they know we are very interested," he says.
Rogers is satisfied with the move, but wants to make sure the town stays on top of the process.
"I'm satisfied with it, I think we need to stay on top of it," he says. "We'll send that first letter out and follow up on a regular basis and see whats changed in the province as far as how they're looking at administering it."
The town will expand the reach of the letter and express interest in having a retail cannabis shop in any of its four wards — not just Harrow.
Rogers tells AM800 News it could be a boost to tourism and the economy in the area.
The province announced earlier this month that Windsor will be getting one of the first stores in Ontario.
