One Essex councillor is looking to bring the issue of water fluoridation to the forefront.
Sherry Bondy says it's up to each individual municipality to make a decision on fluoride and she'd like to get the discussion started in Essex.
There currently is no fluoride being put in the Essex water supply and Bondy says she'd like to keep it that way.
"We own a water treatment plant in Colchester and I want to know what we're up against. I would hope that council would be anti-fluoride. A not willing to fluoride motion is what I'm looking for, but I owe it to my council colleagues to have a discussion. You could say there's pros of fluoride, but I'm not convinced."
She believes administering fluoride should be left in the hands of medical experts.
"I don't want to medicalize our water and I want to give people consent. So it's up to the Town of Essex to provide safe drinking water and that's all, right? It's not up to us to look after people's cavities. Leave that up to the public health and leave that up to people and their personal hygiene. So I want to have that discussion and be aware of what's coming."
Bondy says, like any service, there would be a price associated with it.
"If it does get forced upon us we're looking at a cost that we would have to budget for and I would hope that it isn't. I would hope that we would put up enough resistance and have an opinion right? I'm very supportive of municipal councils having a stance on something just like wind turbines and not willing to host them. I would hope council would have a similar opinion."
Bondy adds she's been hearing from residents worried fluoride may be reintroduced in Essex.
Bondy's motion will discussed at Essex Council's next regular meeting on July 3.
