Officials from the Edmonton Eskimos C-F-L club are on a tour of northern communities to discuss the team's name.
Marketing vice-president Allan Watt says the idea is to hear what northerners think about a name that some say disrespects Inuit people.
He says visits to Yellowknife and Inuvik in the Northwest Territories and Iqaluit in Nunavut are also an attempt to see how Edmonton's football team fits into the North.
Watt and the team's president have met with northerners from the N-W-T's premier to an Indigenous artist.
Watt says the team has done research and held focus groups on the Eskimos name in the south, and calls the northern consultations part of a long process
Some Inuit leaders say the term Eskimo is derogatory and suggest that the days of naming a team after an ethnic group should be long gone.
The word means ``eaters of raw meat.''
