Enwin has issued an alert to its customers.
The utility says it received some calls from customers yesterday reporting that someone had called them to inform them that the Ontario moratorium on disconnections had ended.
The caller says if the customer does not pay the hydro bill in a short period of time, within 20 minutes, the power would be cut off.
The scam has been reported at other utilities across Ontario.
Enwin Spokesperson Barbara Pierce Marshall says Enwin does not operate this way.
"In most cases, the people don't owe the company any money at all," says Marshall.
She says Enwin customers have called the utility wanting some answers.
"They were very confused and wanted to know why all of sudden they were in a position to be disconnected," she says.
Enwin says customers should be prepared to hang up.
Enwin provides at least 10 days notice before disconnecting a customer's service.
