Environmental groups are calling on the Michigan 'Department of Natural Resources' to study the impacts of the Grand Prix on Belle Isle.
They want the study done before approving any new contracts to hold the race on the island.
Head of the 'Belle Isle Concern Group' Sandra Novacek says it is the 'absolute minimum' the department should do.
The Department of Natural Resources has unveiled its proposed new five-year contract that would keep the Grand Prix on the island through to 2023.
Novacek says park users are worried about the island's habitat and public access to what it calls "Detroit's most important sanctuary" which is crippled each spring by several months of race set-up and takedown.
A protest took place back in May ahead of the June races.
