EMS Team Ontario is getting some next extra training thanks to students from the University of Windsor.
This past weekend, students from the Medical Response Service program have hosted a number of scenarios for the team including an active shooter situation, a mass fentanyl overdose at a dorm and an elevator drop with several casualties.
The EMS team won gold at the world's largest medical competition in the Czech Republic last year and team captain, Chris Kirwan, says training like this cannot be matched.
"It's a very, very cool partnership and that way they can kind of see what the real world is all about and kind of see how we would do it in an extreme situation," says Kirwan. "The students are phenomenal. They've been excellent at coming out and participating and being really good actors."
He says all the scenarios are taken from real world headlines.
"They're very realistic. They're very interesting. So we did an active shooter to start which, unfortunately, nowadays is a reality. And then this fentanyl. It's kind of a crisis in Canada right now. So it's a good idea to take things that are headlines in the media right now and learn how to do them very well."
EMS Team Ontario will defend its gold medal at the 21st annual 'Rallye Rejviz' in the Czech Republic May 24-28.
