A bit of a delay in the municipal election on Pelee Island due to the rolling strike by Canada Post.
The strike impacted mail delivery in Windsor and Essex County Monday and as a result, the island had to declare an emergency.
"We were not notified ahead of time [of the strike] so we were unable to make any contingency plans based on having no mail on election day," says Island Deputy Returning Officer Stephanie Rodgers.
Ballot counting will take place Tuesday after the island receives the mail and Rodgers says the delay was necessary to stay in line with the municipal elections act.
"We have to process ballots that come in the mail, up until the end of voting day at 8pm," she says. "We were unable to do that so we could no longer continue the election in line with the municipal elections act so that was the deciding factor."
There are 500 eligible voters on Pelee Island.
Raymond Durocher was acclaimed as mayor.
The races were for council and school board trustees.
