Efforts continue to save the snakes in and around the Ojibway Nature Reserve.
There's a push underway to shut down a section of Matchette Rd. from Sprucewood Ave. to Titcombe Rd. to keep the reptiles from being run over.
Conservation Biologist Jonathan Choquette says "Windsor has the highest snake mortality rate in Ontario and closing Matchette Rd. during migration periods would be a big help. I think that a great starting point would be to test seasonal closures of Matchette Road, in an effort to determine the impact one mortality as well the impact on traffic. I think it would be the cheapest way to move forward."
There are concerns the problem will only get worse if a proposed big box store is built nearby.
That would bring more traffic and more danger to the snakes.
Critics argue closing Matchette would have a negative impact on LaSalle, the Herb Gray Parkway and nearby property owners.
The issue is headed to city council for further discussion.
