The Town of Amherstburg has officially purchased the old Duffy's Tavern and Motor Inn.
Mayor Aldo DiCarlo says the deal recently closed for the waterfront property. He says he cannot share how much the town paid for the property but says a better deal was negotiated than the $1.7-million that was originally reported.
"There's still some technicalities that prevent me from giving exact details but I'm sure that number will come out in the near future," says DiCarlo. "I think once the environmental issues were addressed, the town did quite well with that purchase and before it even closed we already had people contacting us about how quick they can access the property."

"The first step is cleaning up the property, securing it, making sure it's safe to have people on there," he says. "I would say we're probably going to move fairly quickly to demolish the existing buildings and get us to a clean slate so that we can start discussing what the final result is going to be."
DiCarlo says the original asking price was north of $3 million. He says the town's original offer was for close to $1.7 million but says the town was able to negotiate a better price.
The property is located on Dalhousie St., next to Kings Navy Yard Park.
