The former Duffy's Tavern and Inn in Amherstburg is going to meet the wrecking ball, likely in the next week or so.
Council has approved a $280,049.50 contract to Jones Group Ltd. to demolish the building.
The town bought the building for $1.115-million with the deal closing earlier this year.
The asking price was $1.7-million.
The savings are allowing the town to move more quickly to tear Duffy's down.
Amherstburg's Deputy Fire Chief Lee Tome will miss the building.
The largely volunteer department has brought on 20 new firefighters in the last four months and used the vacant building for training drills.
"We put it to good use. We abused it pretty good over the past few months so, it's time. We're looking forward, once Duffy's gone, to what they're going to do with it then to improve the town," says Tome.
He says the building offered the department a unique opportunity to give new recruits specific training.
"Chances are, until they arrived at a fire down the road, they would not have had an opportunity to do, so the building — we put to very good use in giving not only our new recruits, but a number of our other members an opportunity to practice their skills."
The demolition is expected to take about 11 weeks.
The property is on Dalhousie Street next to Kings Navy Yard Park.
