Provincial Police are frustrated after responding to numerous crashes during the snow event Monday afternoon.
In Chatham-Kent, the OPP responded to 22 motor vehicle collisions in 14 hours.
Driving too fast for road conditions is the number one cause of winter collisions according to the OPP.
Speaking on the Lynn Martin Show on AM800, OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt says drivers did not adjust to the conditions.
Sgt Schmidt says the snow created slippery roads quickly.
"Drivers not realizing that conditions are changing and with that you need to adjust you driving because we had far too many cars in the ditches again and really they shouldn't have been there"
He says drivers can be overconfident.
"But when we're driving we think our have our 4-wheel drive and our traction control and we give ourselves just enough time to get to the office and we don't realize that by taking a ferw chances it can cause all kinds of problems and your car is going to go sliding sideways
Sgt Schmidt says when snow is moving into the area, the road conditions become slippery quickly.
"The roads can change so quickly from dry to wet to icy and slushy. And when you hit those brakes at the end of that off-ramp, and you think you're going to stop you may go sliding right through the intersection"
Sgt Schmidt says it's not rocket science, allow yourself extra time to get to and from your destination.
He adds, if the weather is uncertain, check the forecast before heading out and monitor the media outlets for any updates.
