Testimony has wrapped up in the trial of a LaSalle teen charged in a fiery fatal crash.
Ryan Hatton,17, is charged under the Highway Traffic Act with careless driving in the crash in February 2017 that killed his friend 16-year-old Nick Dyer.
Hatton testified he was driving with his three friends on Concession 4 North, when he heard a bang and the car turned to the left.
He said he turned to the right to try and gain control, but the vehicle went into a ditch, hit a culvert, went airborne and landed on its roof.
The engine burst into flames.
He testified he woke Dyer up, who was a backseat passenger, unbuckled his seatbelt and got him out of the car.
Dyer later died in hospital.
The defence argued Hatton's driving did not cause the crash.
The crown suggested Hatton was driving over the speed limit, bounced over a crest in the road, lost control and veered to the left.
Hatton had his licence for about two months when the crash occurred.
As the charge falls under the Provincial Offences Act and the accused was 16 years old at the time of the offence, his name can be released.
