The Downtown Windsor Farmers Market will open for the season later this month but with some restrictions, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The market along with the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association (DWBIA) have released their phase one opening plans which includes limiting the market to only food vendors and physical distancing measures at entry and exits points.
"The farmers have already put the crops in the fields and the food vendors are telling me they're really excited and we're picking up new vendors that won't be able to go to some of the cancelled festivals for this year too," says Market General Manager Steve Green
He says vendors will be separated and the number of operators at the booth will also be limited.
"Where ever possible we're going to have some of our vendors have two people in order to facilitate some good social distancing, one doing the money and one maybe doing the packing," says Green. "So we're going to do everything we can just to make sure that everyone is safe."
Green says the market is another chance to support local businesses and farmers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Everyone has really been strongly committed to keeping our local businesses going and I think there's a real resurgence for making sure that we support all of our local businesses, local farmers," he says.
According to Green, the market is working closely with the local health unit and Farmers Market Ontario.
The market will also have one way traffic flow in each direction plus hand washing stations.
It's set to open on Saturday May 30 from 8am until 1pm.
