Hot and humid weather is descending on Windsor-Essex and The Downtown Mission is already starting to see a jump in visitors.
Daytime highs are expected to hit 31C but will feel like 40C with humidity into Wednesday and with overnight temperatures in the low '20s there won't be much relief.
Executive Director Ron Dunn says the doors are open for anyone who needs to escape the heat.
"Nobody should be subjected to this heat, we are seeing an increase in volume from people who are using us as a cooling centre, we certainly encourage that," he says. "We encourage people to come in out of the weather."
Dunn asks the public to show some compassion when oppressive temperatures hit and send anyone who has nowhere to escape the heat towards the mission.
"If you're out and about, if you see somebody who looks like they might be suffering, stop and buy them a bottle of water or get them some help," Dunn says.
Heat waves always remind Dunn of some shortfalls, even people who aren't homeless utilize the mission's air-conditioning when the temperature spikes.
"We have laws that prohibit landlords from letting the living conditions get too cold, but we don't have a similar law that talks about heat," he says. "We need to do something about that eventually, but there's nothing that makes landlords provide air-conditioning or even a fan."
Dunn says anyone feeling the effects of the heat can stop at any Tim Horton's in Windsor-Essex and ask for help — staff are trained to contact the mission to get people assistance.
