UPDATE: OPP says the gas leak has been repaired and the area is now safe.
Hundreds of downtown Leamington businesses and home were evacuated for a "major gas leak."
The Ontario Provincial Police Leamington Detachment and Leamington Fire Services responded to an underground natural gas eruption near the intersection of Erie and Mill Street Saturday morning.
OPP evacuated the area of Erie Street North, Talbot Street East, Princess Street and Russell Street.
Erie Street North has since been reopened to its businesses, residents and commuters.
Police advise however that Mill Street West, between Fox Street and Erie Street North, will remain closed for approximately two more hours to allow Union Gas to fill a hole where the repair was made.
