The North American International Auto Show is officially open to the public.
The two week long show is chocked full of the latest vehicles from around the world and especially from the Detroit 3.
The awards at the media kickoff saw only one domestic maker came away with a win - the Lincoln Navigator.
Lincoln Motor President Kumar Galhotra is pleased his company captured the Truck of the Year honours.
He says their process to develop the vehicle is key to its success.
"We get to know our customers really, really well and then we start designing the experience they will have with the vehicle, not necessarily the technology. So we actually lay out, what should the experience be as they approach the vehicle, as they get in the vehicle, as they sit in the vehicle."
Galhotra says the Navigator is already a runaway sales success.
"This particular vehicle is, at the moment, nearly impossible to keep on our dealer lots. They arrive and they go and there's a substantial amount of backlog of orders. So the vehicle has been extremely well received in the marketplace."
He says Lincoln has been very successful in China, but winning at home is nice.
"We are an American company, we're an American icon. So it's always great to see us be recognized in an event like this."
You can also see the Car of the Year winner, the Honda Accord, and Utility Vehicle of the Year, the Volvo XC60, at the show which runs until January 28 at Cobo Center.
