Heavy rain didn't stop the second annual Diversity Day from drawing in hundreds of residents on Saturday.
The event hosted by Windsor police and Windsor fire last year, was held in the centre of Lanspeary Park — this year's event included more partners, entertainment and food than ever, but when the skies opened up it was in jeopardy of being cancelled.
Windsor police Constable Neil McEachrane tells AM800 News that wasn't an option and the city stepped up big-time by opening the outdoor arena enclosure to house the event.
"It's something that people look forward to and we actually plan a lot for it," he says. "We got lucky and got space inside and moved inside, it was so much better."
He says the day continues to be about getting together to show how many people drive the community.
"Our diverse community is out here today and that's the whole idea behind why we're here, to celebrate Windsor, to celebrate our diversity and to celebrate the fact that we all get along so well," says McEachrane.
Dole Foods donated several skids of fruit to the event, and Plentiful Harvest brought a truck-load of vegetables to give to anyone who wanted them at the event.
The Unemployed Help Centre, New Beginnings and the Multi-Cultural Council of Windsor-Essex also helped stage this year's event.
