The Mayor of Windsor is hoping he has an ally in Ottawa when it comes to funding infrastructure projects in the city.
Drew Dilkens met with federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau during his stop in Windsor on Monday.
Dilkens says money to prevent basement flooding in the east-end dominated the discussion.
"The city of Windsor's application for the $89-million to the Disaster Mitigation Relief Fund, that will help provide funding for the sewer plan that we put forward for Riverside and east Windsor," he says. "In addition, we talked about the Paul Martin buildingĀ and the importance for the federal government to become involved in the Paul Martin building."
In May, the province announced a $20-million committment to help move the University of Windsor's law school into the Paul Martin building, bringing 600 students downtown.
But federal funding is needed before the move is confirmed.
The mayor says Morneau indicated a clear interest.
"He asked for the specifics of our application which we provided. I'm confident that he'll be, and his staff will be, reviewing that and being as supportive as they can," he says.
Mayor Dilkens says he came away from the meeting feeling positive about the results.
