One of the most startling differences in preparations for the Gordie Howe International Bridge is the state of the two sites.
There is a major $350-million pre-construction project underway in the Brighton Beach area of Windsor.
On the US side in the Delray neighborhood, very little has been done beyond a few demolitions.
Andy Doctoroff is the Special Projects Advisor for the Michigan Governor's office.
"The 2 sides in so many fundamental ways are different" explains Doctoroff, "Very significantly we didn't have the authorization pursuant to the crossing agreement to even begin to acquire properties until 2015"
He says the requirements are much more complex on the Canadian side because the soil needs to be compacted.
Doctoroff explains that it's not fair to compare the two sites directly, it's literally apples and oranges.
He does believe the project will come together on the schedule they envisioned years ago.
Doctoroff is confident the US site for the bridge will be ready for the start of construction.
He says they have ownership of 93% of the land needed in Delray for the 60 hectare site.
The remaining 7% of the properties are owned by Maroun family interests and are in court for a resolution.
