Crime rates in Windsor are up in 2018.
Overall the crimes so far this year have increased almost 13% compared to last year.
Deputy Police Chief Brad Hill says the trend is across the board, but higher in some categories.
"We were on a downward trend for a long time, this year we are trending upwards. We hope that we're making some headway and that we'll start to see the trend come back down again but it's difficult to predict"
He says murders have made a big difference in the rate.
"Our homicides are up, I think, 300%. We average three a year we're up at nine this year. So obviously that's a huge increase. It's been a challenge for our major crime unit because the major crime unit's no bigger than it was and we're doing three times as much work with the same amount of people"
Hill says the opioid crisis is a large factor in the increase in crime.
"Crimes against persons are up 12.9% so almost 13% property crimes are up 23%. So violent crimes are not up as high as property crimes. Property crimes I would attribute a lot of that crime to drug addiction and people feeding a drug habit"
Deputy Chief Hill says it is positive that all but one of the homicides have been solved at this point.
He says the number of crimes did decrease from October to November and he hopes that trend continues.
