A testing centre dedicated to assessing the impact of COVID-19 on migrant workers in the Leamington and Kingsville area will shut down Thursday.
Erie Shores HealthCare says without further federal or provincial directives, keeping the centre running is not an "efficient use of resources."
The hospital says it also considered on-farm testing but has ruled that out, saying it would be "next to impossible'' to attend to the roughly 176 agri-food farms in the region.
Since June 9, the centre has tested more than 750 workers.
There are about 8,000 agri-food workers in Essex County at more than 170 farms.
The testing centre was a joint effort of several agencies, including Essex-Windsor EMS, Windsor Regional Hospital, Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare and the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.
The medical teams were assisted by the Migrant Worker Community Program.
The health unit reports more than 200 workers have tested positive for the virus, and two workers have died.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and Windsor Regional Hospital CEO David Musyj have called for mandatory testing of migrant farm workers.
