The City of Windsor is backing an application to push the Farrow Riverside Miracle Park project over its fundraising goal.
Council voted to put up $150,000 for an application to the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities Accessibility Grant for the park on Wyandotte Street East near Janisse Drive. Riverside Minor Baseball is also putting up $200,000 for the application that could secure the $500,000 grant and push the project over its $3-million goal.
Just over $2.3-million has already been raised for the park's playground, Miracle League accessible baseball diamond, cenotaph and wellness track.
Project Co-Chair Bill Kell says the application is for some specific items.
"It's for the wellness track with the workout stations that are there, plus the completion of the sports field," says Kell, who adds the group will continue to fundraise locally. "Anything extra that we get goes completely into the park for other amenities, players' benches and that type of thing."
With or without the grant, Kell says the park will be ready by spring.
"We have had some delays in the construction but we should be completed and hope everyone will come and join us for opening day on May 30," he added.
Jumpstart Grants support capital costs for construction and renovations to improve physical accessibility to, and inclusivity in recreation facilities across Canada.
Kell expects to find out if the grant is approved by early May.
