The 60 workers are looking for their first collective agreement

Contract talks for a first collective agreement are underway between Unifor Local 444 and GFL Environmental.

Local 444 President Dave Cassidy says talks began earlier this week between the two parties.

He would not discuss key issues but tells AM800 news talks are progressing forward.

Cassidy says the union represents just under 60 workers.

"It's the old city garbage collectors, the city outsourced it and the workers came to us and wanted to join the union," says Cassidy.  "So we signed them up and we're looking forward to getting a fair and equitable agreement."

Cassidy says the union has applied for conciliation and talks will resume in early October.
