Construction of the Great Canadian Flag is now under way at Windsor's riverfront.
The Great Canadian Flag project began five years ago with the idea of promoting Canadian nationalism.
The flag is to be 150 feet tall, with its dimensions being 60 x 30 feet or 18.24 x 9.12 metres.
Great Canadian Flag Project Chair Peter Hrastovec says we are all united under the Canadian Flag.
He says the flag represents more than our nation's identity.
"This is about all of us," says Hrastovec. "It is not about about any one individual or any one group of persons. It has given us opportunity and it is going to give opportunity to our children and our children's children and we need to protect it, support it and love it and this is one way of demonstrating it."
He says the flag is designed to survive Windsor's weather conditions.
"Well, it is going to be made of a synthetic material that is going to be able to withstand wind shear," says Hrastovec. "It is going to be able to fly in 10-kilometre winds so you are going to see it flying quite readily and easily on that waterfront of ours."
He says the flag would not have been possible without the community's support.
"The project itself is in the neighbourhood of $355,000, which includes the legacy funds that we have raised," says Hrastovec. "Right now we are just under $300,000 raised and that is a combination of privately donated funds plus the large federal grant that we got for this project."
The flag will fly by the riverfront near Ouellette Ave. and Riverside Dr. in a few weeks.
