Record new vehicle sales in the U.S. are supporting solid performance among Canadian automakers.
But Canadian auto exports could be at risk under NAFTA renegotiations, according to The Conference Board of Canada’s latest outlook for the industry.
Michael Burt is the Director of Industrial Economic Trends at The Conference Board of Canada.
Speaking on the Afternoon News, he says the board believe sales number in the auto sector are near their peak.
"It's largely run its course," says Burt. "We think vehicle sales in the US and Canada are at their maximum levels going forward. So growth in the industry's going to be a little bit harder to find in the years to come."
Burt says the Conference Board does not expect any new auto assembly plants will be built in Canada, but there could be expansion in the parts sector.
