The lawyer for a Windsor man under a 12-month peace bond for a 'fear of terrorism' offence was hoping for less restrictive conditions.
Mohammed El-Shaer was initially arrested and sentenced to jail for passport fraud in 2014.
Now, under the peace bond, he has to wear a GPS tracking bracelet for the 6 months and report to the RCMP once a week.
For the following 6 months, there's no bracelet, but has to check in with police twice a week.
Federal Prosecutor Howard Piafsky believes the restrictions are appropriate. "Mr. El-Shaer demonstrated over the course of a few years that he was able and willing to defy court orders to travel abroad, to go to places that were obviously of interest to Canadian authorities who travel abroad to Syria, so it was important to impose conditions to keep a check on his behaviour."
El-Shaer's lawyer says the restrictions are more extreme than expected.
He's now looking into the possibility of an appeal.
