A popular south Windsor neighbourhood may soon be getting a pedestrian crossover.
On Wednesday, the city's Environment, Transportation & Public Safety Committee gave the thumbs up to a pedestrian crossover on Labelle St. at Northway Ave.
The $62,000 crossover will be located near Bellewood Public School to assist students crossing the street.
Committee Chair, Ward 4 Councillor Chris Holt feels it's the city's responsibility to provide a safe passage to schools.
"We need to provide safe transportation for those who choose to walk to school in the neighbourhood," says Holt. "So that's what this is all about, adding and connecting in the missing jigsaw pieces of the pedestrian network in south Windsor there, as well giving people a safe way to cross the street."
The crossover is part of the city's traffic calming initiative which Holt says will improve safety in the neighbourhood.
"We only do this if it's warranted," says Holt. "We can't control every single mom and dad driving their kids to school but we can control providing safe passage way for those who choose to do the responsible thing and choose to walk to school. I believe we have that responsibility as a municipality to provide that safe passage to schools."
The committee also approved the addition of a sidewalk on Northway Ave. between Labelle St. and Grand Marais Rd. W. at a cost of $125,000.
But the committee denied a sidewalk for the south side of Labelle St. between Youngstown St. and California Ave. The sidewalk carried a price tag of $52,600.
"People are afraid of having sidewalks in front of their house and people don't like it," says Holt. "The committee is recommending to council that we install sidewalks on one side of Northway but the committee chose not to recommend sidewalks on Labelle.
All items now head to city council for final approval.
