The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society is urging pet owners to remember their pets in these frigid temperatures.
Speaking on AM800's the Lynn Martin Show, Society Executive Director Melanie Coulter says even dogs that enjoy the cold weather can be affected by these temperatures.
If a dog lives outside, it must have an insulated shelter with fresh water and enough food.
But Coulter adds, if something does happen to the dog, the owner can be charged.
"Even if you are meeting those standards, it can still be dangerous," he says. "If your dog is under the weather, if they are having a rough go or if it is colder than they can handle, if something happens to your animal you can still be held responsible."
Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.
A frigid arctic air mass and strong winds will result in wind chill values of -30 Celcius to -35C Tuesday night through to Friday morning.
Overnight low temperatures will range between -20 and -25 degrees combined with winds gusting between 50 and 70 km/h.
If a pet is injured or killed by the cold, owners can face up to two years in jail and a fine of up to $60,000.
If you see an animal who you believe is not being cared for properly, call the humane society at 519-966-5751. The humane society says it investigates every concern that they receive.
Conditions should improve Friday as milder air moves into the region.
