That's according to Mayor Drew Dilkens, who told AM800's The Morning Drive that the cameras are a benefit for both traffic purposes and police.
Ontario has announced that $6 million will be made available over three years, grant money to cover 50 per cent of the costs associated with buying and installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and supplies.
Dilkens, who is also chair of the Windsor Police Services Board, says he already notified Windsor Police Chief Pam Mizuno that they need to apply.
"They're a benefit to all of us in the city, not just on the police front but on the traffic operations front to make sure the network itself, as you're driving around, is as smooth and effecient as possible," he says.
Dilkens says the city's current cameras are connected into a traffic management system.
"In the event that police need to access information that the system captures, there is a process for them to make a request and to get access for investigative purposes," he says. "It's really a benefit for us when different events happen in the city and investigations are ongoing, I know police rely on this data."
The province made funding available in 2020 and the City of Windsor received $142,650 in grant money that was used to add more cameras and upgrade existing ones to new digital technology.
The city currently has cameras in place at 35 intersections across Windsor.
