The City of Windsor is looking to honour those who have gone above and beyond to help others during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens has announced the COVID Community Champions and tells AM800 News volunteers from across the city of Windsor have stepped up in unique ways to support one another.
"Most of those people didn't do what they did for any recognition, so it will be even more special," he says. "Folks will have an ability to nominate those who they think are COVID Community Champions who showed great leadership and did great things whether they were big or small over the last five months."
Dilkens says anyone can be nominated through his website.
"Who the nominator is, who they're nominating and what they've done that makes them a COVID Community Champion," he says. "We know over the past five months there have been great things that have happened and COVID-19 has brought out the best in so many people even though it's been a difficult situation."
Dilkens says the idea has been in the works since Transit Windsor had to suspend its service when the pandemic began.
"Almost overnight 1,500 people joined a Facebook group to say hey, we're going to make sure seniors and vulnerable people get their groceries and their medicine so everyone can keep going. It was the community taking care of each other."
Individuals and groups can be nominated and will be contacted by Mayor Dilkens over the coming months.
Dilkens says COVID Community Champions nominations will remain open into the foreseeable future.
