This weekend marks the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day, and the City of Windsor will be celebrating the day.
First celebrated in 1970, the event now includes more than 192 counties, including locally in Windsor-Essex when they started celebrating in 1989.
The event will include activities for the entire family, environmental exhibits, arts and crafts, games, prizes and entertainment such as Sciensational Snakes which will show off their critters on stage.
More than 30 different organizations are taking part in the event aiming to provide a voice and venue to environmental causes.
Karina Richters, supervisor for Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change with the City of Windsor, says it's important to celebrate the day every year.
"So I think Earth Day is reflecting on what we've achieved, and what's still in front of us, is actually a really good opportunity. And with that, that's why we have all these environmental exhibitors coming to share their knowledge, and hopefully every individual action that people take improves us even further down the road."
She says there are small actions that everyone can do to help the environment.
"If you're drinking a single use water bottle every single day of the year, that's 365 bottles that are going into landfill or into recycling. Imagine timesing that by our population. That's how much of that contributes to harming the environment. So, every little action that you're doing is one step towards that bigger picture."
Richters adds that there will be many organizations taking part in the day.
"To start off we have the Ojibway Nature Centre coming and they're going to have scavenger hunts for kids. We have Windsor Public Library. A great example of reusing, you don't need to buy that new book, you can reuse it. We have Tourism Windsor-Essex who just announced the Windsor's bird, so they'll be there with their birding guide."
The event will take place at Malden Park, located at 4200 Malden Road, on Sunday, April 23, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The event is free, and those attending are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle as a hydration station will be onsite.
The Town of Tecumseh will also be hosting an Earth Day event on April 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lakewood Park South.
The Town of Amherstburg will be hosting an Earth Day event at the Libro Centre on April 22 starting at 9 a.m.
The Beaver Scouts will be hosting an Earth Day clean up at Devonwood Conservation on Sunday, April 23 at 11 a.m.
