In just the past two years, the City of Windsor is holding more than a million dollars in unpaid parking tickets.
Supervisor of Parking Enforcement Bill Kralovensky says it sounds like a lot, but it's actually lower than in the past. He says the numbers are dropping even more this year because of the new technology and parking app.
He says most of that outstanding bill is from last year.
"For 2017 we have $795,000 that is still unaccounted for. And from 2016 we have $307,000"
He says they do have to write off some of the tickets.
"The registered owner of the plate no longer exists shall we say. So that money would never get collected," explains Kralovensky. "There is some out of state, out of province where we do hold off and then we send them to an outside collection agency obviously that costs us a little money to do that but better get something than nothing."
He says there is a pretty strong incentive to pay on time.
"By the time it all goes to collections at the Service Ontario, like I said a $20 ticket by the time you get there is $120, with all the extra fees they add, we add." says Kralovensky "Then you still have to pay for your little sticker on top of that."
Kralovensky says Service Ontario is a major reason for the prompt payment because if you don't pay you can't get your licence plate renewed.
He says a portion of the amount owing from 2016 is because some people have paid for their sticker for 2 years and the ticket hasn't caught up to them yet.
