The City of Windsor is covering part of the cost for Farhi Developments to study the property behind the WFCU Centre.
The 60-acre site has been used partly for parking for events like the Memorial Cup, but Farhi plans more permanent uses.
Council has approved up to $32,000 toward feasibility and environmental assessment studies of the site.
Mayor Drew Dilkens says Farhi has shown it wants to make use of the property
Dilkens says the city doesn't pay any money up front, but once the eligible costs are paid by the fdeveloper, the city wiull reimburse them.
He calls this is a positive step.
"Mr. Farhi has committed to us that he's interested in moving forward there, he's submitted a plan to us we've worked with him to identify the piece we're interested in acquiring for either parking or an addition on the WFCU" explains Dilkens "So it's both parties following through on the commitments they made over a year ago"
The city's share is about a third of the $97,300 cost of the 3 studies involved in assessing whether the site is viable for redevelopment.
The property is currently zoned industrial and would allow for a range of manufacturing, light industrial or service commercial uses.
Farhi has indicated an interest is redeveloping the land to mixed use which requires the environmental studies be done.
