Choose Windsor.
That's the message to the bid committee for the 2022 Can-Am Police and Fire Games.
Mayor Drew Dilkens says the city is gearing up for its final presentation to the committee which is scheduled to happen in two weeks.
He says council agreed to bid on the games in April.
"We're getting close to the final step in that process and there's a presentation that will happen in a couple of weeks time," says Dilkens. "We'll know probably in about three weeks whether or not we're selected to host those games."
He describes the games as interesting, and would look to draw crowds like the Canadian Adult Hockey Recreational Association Tournament (CARHA) did back in 2016.
"There's some unique aspects to the bid and to the games themselves so the public would enjoy watching them," says Dilkens. "The economic benefit would be something similar to CARHA and I think if you ask any retailers in the City of Windsor, if you ask any of the restaurants or bar owners, they would say CARHA was a phenomenal success."
He says the games include a wide variety of different events.
"Some are very unique. Some are really specialized to police and fire so there's things you don't see all the time. The people that who will be here, you will have some families but you will have folks who are here to have fun as well."
There is no cost to bid but if the city is awarded the event, it would price tag would be roughly $580,000. The host for the 2018 & 2020 games is The Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, while Thunder Bay hosted the games in 2016. The winning bid is expected to be announced in three weeks.
